Course Calendar or Schedule

This section should include a daily or weekly schedule for the entire semester.

It is important that you indicate that the schdule is tentative as you may need to change the schedule. Indicating at the outset that the schedule is tentative will make changes more acceptable to your students.

Creating this section will take time, but it is worthwhile in the long run. Developing the schedule gives you the opportunity to analyze your course content, decide on how to cluster or group the information into meaningful units, and determine how much time your students will need to master the material.

When students are asked to list what makes a class successful, one of the most frequently mentioned components is that the class is well organized. A schedule gives your students a sense of organization.

A detailed, tentative schedule keeps your students well informed about the topic of each class. Students can see what they will miss if they have a planned absence and will appreciate your organization. You can use the schedule as a reference instead of planning the course week by week during the semester. However, the course content for each class must be feasible and the schedule should allow for adjustments in case the pace is too intense or the class is progressing too slowly.

Headings for the tentative schedule may include:

  • date
  • chapters or pages to be read
  • assignment due dates
  • topic
  • guest Speaker
  • location change
  • exam dates
  • holidays or no class scheduled
  • field trip
