Active Learning


Engaging Students in Active Learning

Research suggests that the key to effective student learning and instruction, regardless of class size, is engaging students in Active Learning. Active Learning relies upon the participation of the student in the learning process. In other words, students learn best when they are albe to discuss what they have been reading and learning and then apply those concepts and ideas to daily life experiences.

Active Learning

To promote an environment of Active Learning, teachers should attempt to ensure that classes:

  • Are well organized and easily understandable
  • Pursue and meet course objectives and learning objectives
  • Facilitate the learning of new knowledge
  • Set high but realistic and achievable standards
  • Are thought-provoking, stimulating, and motivating
  • Demonstrate the instructors competency of and enthusiasm for the subject matter
  • Encourage student-facutly and student-student interactions
  • Encourage students to spend adequate time completing educational tasks
  • Respect and value the students' diverse talents and ways of learning


Fostering Active Learning

To engage students in the Active Learning process and address the diversity of student learning styles, instructors should use a variety of teaching strategies and tasks. Different types of teaching strategies include:
