In-Class Activities

In-class activities are a good method of fostering Active Learning in the classroom. It is essential before beginning the activity to decide the assignment will be carried out in pairs, in small groups, or in large groups. Once this has been determined, set specific tasks for students/groups to carry out:

  • Summarize the main points of a past or present class period
  • Determine a strategy for solving a problem
  • Complete or perform a calculation
  • Derive an equation or complete the derivation of an equation
  • Give a new example or application for a studied concept
  • Discuss an answer to a question
  • Generate test questions highlighting the subject matter covered
  • Apply concepts to a small problem
  • Answer questions on a handout or worksheet
  • Take a short test and then correct each others' answers
