Using Question and Answer Periods

Active learning can be bolstered in the large classroom setting through question and answer sessions. It is important to create a friendly, collaborative, non-threatening class atmosphere.

Tips on Question and Answer sessions:

  • Use carefully planned questions to guide and assess students' understanding of the subject matter
  • Wait for the students to speak and respond in a welcoming way
  • Collect answers and write them on the blackboard; correct wrong answers together as a class
  • Ask knowledge-based, open-ended, and opinion-based questions
  • Carefully plan how you want students to respond to questions (show of hands, votes, surveys)
  • Provide opportunities for students to ask you questions by giving them time to reflect on what they have learned
