Student-Student Interaction

Interaction between students can be just as valuable to the learning experience as interaction between the student and instructor. Interaction between students also establishes a community within the classroom. The comfort and drop in anxiety that often occurs from the forming of such a community is very advantageous to the learning process. Strive to foster Student-Student interactions by:

  • Asking students to get to know one another on the first day of class (for example, ask them to introduce themselves to their neighbors in class and talk about their interests)
  • Encouraging students to work on projects together in pairs or groups
  • Helping students form study groups (give credit for group work)
  • Asking students to explain difficult ideas to each other
  • Asking students to discuss key concepts
  • Rotating students when working in pairs or groups
  • Encouraging students to solve problems via e-mail
