Introduction

Every instructor has, at some point, been a student. Often that experience as a student leads instructors to certain conclusions about presentation styles. Which of the following statements could you make?

  • I remember a dynamic psychobiology instructor, which must be why I remember so much of the class material.
  • I do not remember much about that economics class because I fell asleep so often. The instructor delivered monotonous lectures!
  • I teach how I was taught.
  • I have incorporated some elements from the classes I took into my own lectures and presentations because they worked for me.
  • I do not incorporate any elements from the classes I took, as my audience and/or content is different.

Although there are different delivery styles, countless content areas and a wide array of audiences, there are certain skills that instructors should develop in order to design, develop and deliver an effective lecture or presentation. These skills are the focus of this module.
