Assessment and Evaluation

Challenge 1:

Academic technology can be used in a variety of ways to help both students and instructors with assignments. Providing clear instructions that students can access 24/7 may make the difference in a student's grade. Giving them tools to succeed in assignments, such as Web page evaluation guidelines, may reduce the numbers of errors and improve grades. Finally, having clearly defined assessment criteria, such as those found in a rubric, will help students meet your expectations.

Challenge 2:

Tests and quizzes may be used to assess student performance, but also to provide self-assessment mechanisms for students. By giving students a chance to check their own progress, you give them a chance to go back and devote more time to problem areas before exams worth a large percentage of the total grade.

Challenge 3:

Rather than wait until the course is over, it is a good idea for instructors to check on students' progress, as well as their own teaching effectiveness, at least once during the course. It is hard for instructors to know how well they are meeting students' needs without asking. Formative Evaluation is an important tool for collecting feedback from students, so you may modify what you are doing to meet students' needs. You may use paper or online tools to collect formative evaluation data from your students. However, if you ask students for their feedback about teaching effectiveness, then be prepared to make changes to the course!
