Setting Expectations for Using Academic Technology
Challenge 1:
It is easy to get caught up in the excitement surrounding particular technology tools or applications. It
is important to ask, however, "How will using this technology help my students learn?" For instance,
using a video demonstration may illustrate a concept that is difficult to explain with text and graphics.
Before jumping on a technology bandwagon, investigate why it is approprite to use a specific tool or
application.
Challenge 2:
Many academic technology uses required by instructors are highly appropriate for the learning process.
However, before using these technologies it is important to consider how the students will be affected.
For instance,a professor in the Marketing Department might assign students to create a marketing video,
but not check to see if there are cameras available for students to check out or video editing equipment
and software in the college computer labs. Students cannot realistically complete assignments in situations
like this. If you work with the academic technology support staff on your campus, they can help you
determine what technology is available to students.
