Introduction

In the old days, people warned of "putting the cart before the horse". These days, we are in constant danger of putting the technology before the teaching. Many people would love for technology to be the answer to problems like larger class sizes, increasing workloads and more. Before we look at how to integrate technology into teaching, though, we have to look at what we want students to do to meet the learning objectives. From there, we can make decisions about whether or not it is appropriate to use technology in the process.

This module could be much larger. There are so many aspects of technology integration out there, it will make your head spin. For this module, we have looked at the following tasks within the areas of course design, course development, course implementation and assessment:

  • Course Planning, Design & Development
    • Helping students improve metacognitive skills, or helping students learn how they learn best
    • Deciding for what course objectives and activities it is appropriate to use technology
    • Finding existing resources
  • Course Implementation
    • Identifying challenges and success strategies for using PowerPoint to deliver lectures
    • Identifiying aspects of successful teaching online
  • Assessment
    • Defining assessment criteria
    • Providing self-assessment mechanisms to students
    • Evaluating teaching effectiveness

For each of these tasks, we have provided examples and strategies related to performing them with technology. It must be said, however, that most of them, if not all, may be performed without technology as well. You must determine for yourself, perhaps with the help of a faculty development center or a peer in your department, if the technology-related strategies will increase your students' chances for learning success.
