Using Academic Technology
Challenge 1:
One of the most commonly used academic technology tools is PowerPoint™. When students and faculty from the 23
CSU campuses were asked to give their perspective on the use of this tool to enhance teaching and learning, the
disparity between the groups was surprising. Faculty were certain that PowerPoint™ was making a significantly
positive impact on the learning process. Students, frequently, had differing opinions. The challenge is to identify
what teaching strategies are effective using this tool and what support students need to take advantage of what it has to offer.
Challenge 2:
Faculty throughout the world are exploring options for teaching all or part of their courses in an online
environment. Many are stymied by the various tools available and how they might be used in specific disciplines
and in specific teaching situations. While many tutorials and workshops are available to help faculty learn how
to operate the tools, less support is available on how to use them effectively.
